Stone Ocean is a pretty solid part. The only problems I have with it are that sometimes certain events are never really explained and the fact that there's a Stand that's literally the stuff of nightmares.

They didn't. They said there were no plans for new Megas because they wanted to fucos on Z-Moves, but they were obviously talking about Sun/Moon.
Next gen they'll either give both some focus, as neither is new anymore, or create a new gimmick while keeping Megas and Z-Moves secondary again.
Just the fact they will keep making megas avaliable every game (like they do for all pokémon forms) pretty much guarantees sooner or later they will want to add more.

Megas got put on ice because their novelty has wore off. If they wanted to scrap them entirely we wouldn't get all of them back in gen 7. Megas will be exciting again after we have a couple of years to get sick of Z-moves.

If they introduce megas every single game people will get bored of them, and sooner or later - in a few generations time - nearly every evo family will have a Mega. It's not special if literally everybody has one, and it's not a realistic thing to do either (imagine collecting all the Mega Stones).

Megas will be back, probably in future remakes. It makes sense to hold off from doing more Megas until Sinnoh remakes where they can give Megas to newer Pokemon (gen 4 and 5 are sorely lacking in Megas, and Gen 6 has none bar Diancie). New Megas and new regional forms are their ultimate aces in the hole, they can pull them out every time there's a new remake and it'll instantly make the remake sell better since people will need it to keep up with the meta (despite being the same generation as the previous game). It worked with ORAS, it'll work again and they'd be stupid not to do it.

I imagine it will be over the course of a few generations. Sun and Moon obviously try sweeping Megas to the sidelines, Megas are banned in VGC, and from what I've heard Sun and Moon don't even make all of the Mega Stones accessible, some megas are simply unobtainable. It wouldn't surprise me if by Gen 8 or 9, they're almost completely phased out, except for the odd Mystery Gift event where they'll give out a Charmander with Charizardite X or something like that.

I don't think the meta can ever truly be stable if they just keep the Mega Evolution gravy train rolling, and I don't think they can reasonably pump out Megas every generation without the appeal being lost.

best crew, best brojos (although Gyro is shaping up to be top tier too I know he dies ;_;), great battles, cool villains (I like the villain of the week formula more, fight me), fantastic stands. It has the second blandest JoJo but I still loved it

It wouldn't ever really be realistic to do true fusions though, not for every Pokemon, without taking up WAY too much time for 3D modelling tons of new fused forms. I could see them doing something like this
