This. She'll get a cameo or special. That's pretty much it. Serena's purpose was to market the Kalos generation of games, and she has fulfilled that purpose already. After her cameo/special, she's as good as gone.

Those who think she will return more permanently seem to forget that this isn't an ordinary anime. It's a glorified, never-ending infomercial. I wish that wasn't the case, but that's the way it is.

The writers did give the viewers quite the treat with how she departed, though, and I think most people ought to be content with that. For those who desire more "permanence" for Serena, that's what fan fiction and headcanons are for.

But the idea that XY and XY&Z would actually be Ash's endgame was always a shot in the dark, even if at times I engaged in wishful thinking that there was a reasonable chance of it actually being true. I miss Serena, but I've watched this show long enough to know that this is just the way it works.
