How is this whitewashing? We're not pretending he's a precious cinnamon roll who didn't do nothing, just acknowledging that he never had much of a choice. Hala even says that he still wanted to crush people back when he was a kid trying to become a captain. When you see a violent eleven year old (and I mean violent, not just some Call of Duty brat), you don't go "well I guess this is a naturally evil kid, stop whitewashing him".
