Don't forget a lot of challenges in Pokemon are team based and can be harder when first faced since you are significantly harder. I mean Whitney becomes easy with a Geodude or Machop in your party, ghetsis has A few weaknesses and his ace wishes it was faster. Half the gyms in Kanto get trivialised by choosing Bulbasaur. A good fighting or fire type severely weakens Steven since he is a type specialist. W2 I did as a mono Lucario run and only marlin gave me trouble. As much as I love GS and HGSS the only thing that can make them hard is the shitty exp curve like how Sabrina is only OP IN RB dude to psychic as a type being busted. Seriously there is only one game where I believe the challenge was 100% real and couldn't be avoided with game knowledge and proper team building. And that is Cynthia given her team is just so balanced and solid.

The difficult part for most people who are just getting into the series is apparently learning the type chart. A friend of mine told me that it was 'insane' that I knew all the matchups.

But really, if you've ever played a Pokémon game before, it's inexcusable that you don't know the type chart. Many matchups are instinctively obvious, and the others you learn as you play.

I was woefully unprepared for the fight with Ilima in the Marina. His Smeargle fucking swept my team and I hoped that would be a good indicator for the difficulty of this game. I was wrong. Level scaling is much better, though.

They added three types since Yellow (Dark, Steel, Fairy), so there's 18.

I mean, there's a lot of potential matchups, but you don't have to kow them by heart when you first boot up the game. You learn as you go.

And now you even don't have to because the game tells you what effect your moves will have.
