Really? All I did was give it two good Thundershocks, though to be fair I wasn't really trying new mons and was sticking to safe older ones like Magnemite.

just trade a lilipup for a bounsweet. z-move splash + razor leaf = win
>>
>>30054326
None because it's sort of disappointing in-game and competitively

If you REALLY want it though, go Quiet, Brave, or Modest.
>>
>>30054305
Ok and what level was your Magnemite? I find it hard to believe you two-shotted Totem Wishiwashi with Thundershocks with its SDEF bulk with something level appropriate.

did I just get ridiculously lucky?

charjabug destroyed it easily
>>
>>30054524
In the long run it doesn't matter since you're not using this exact Wishiwashi for competitive (you'll breed one with better IVs and nature with the right materials) and you can get by with suboptimal natures in-game
>>
>>30054573
why the fuck would i breed for ivs when i can just slap a bottlecap on it

i can finally use my bros from the story competitively with the only thing to keep in mind being nature. wishiwashi doesn't even have any good egg moves
>>
>>30054601
Oh, I mean, sure, if you like killing your time catching stuff multiple times.

I'd personally play it safe since IV increases aren't permanent and they might not be a thing again next gen
>>
>>30054565
No, Totems are designed that unless you have a hard counter, the Totem is meant to wreck you.

Since everything is stacked in it's favor
>>
>>30054565
>>30054439
Same here. Is Charjabug just a good luck charm?
>>
>>30054637
GF trims a lot of features, but this is something so essential I can't see them doing away with
>>
>>30054643
>unless you have a hard counter
it's the game's fault

grass types right before wishiwashi, fucking brick break TM right before gumshoos
>>
>>30054565

From what I've seen, a lot of the totems are that way. If you've got a strong SE hit to take them out fast you're good, but if you'd normally take a few turns wearing them down they difficulty ramps up noticeably.

I actually like how its going, both the Wishiwashi and Salazzle fights felt like real battles to me, ending with my last pokemon of my team of three just edging out the win.
>>
>do a z-move

>>
I gave Charjabug X-SpAttck and the rest was history. Charjabug is a fuckin based bromon
>>
>>30054674
>grass types right before wishiwashi

it'd be even easier if there were grass types way before wishiwashi, because it'd be trained and have a better moveset
>>

>>

>>
>>30054559
>alolan grimer dropped to half HP from a single water gun
>doesnt even get the poison to take effect

i was lucky mine summoned a wishiwashi ally and not alomomola
>>
I really got lucky on my second attempt on him, as Charjabug managed to crit and gain a special attack boost from her first charge beam and then gain another special buff from her next charge beam. That and my Charjabug was a timid nature one.
>>

>>
>>30055714

I was trying to play it through with exp share off but I got sick of running back to Pokecenters after every other fight.

If this game didn't have the "pokemon can summon waves of reinforcements as a free action" mechanic then wild battles wouldn't be so stressful, but they'd still be grindy as fuck.

Is Toucannon actually good? I reviewed it's base speed after it evolved and instantly dropped it. It's signature move being 2-turn was also a huge turn-off, so is it surprisingly bulky?

>>
>>30056143

The game balance is weird in that you likely won't get enough exp to keep pace with the game's progression without exp share, but turning it on will overlevel you past the point of a challenge.

I've made a rule to only turn it on if I go to a level and find I'm below the wild pokemon level.

Literally don't get why you guys had so much trouble with this. I beat him with nothing but Lv 24/25 Torracat using Bite and Lv 20 Magnemite using Thunder Wave and Spark. Magnemite KO'd but I mean I still had 4 other Pokemon in reserve just in case.

Bullshit I had exp share turned on and I wasn't even that overlevelled.
>>
>>30056183
>>30056222

I've gone with a self imposed rule of only using Refresh when the post battle prompt comes up, and its working pretty well. Had a few instances of Pokemon (especially my starter) pulling through on things they really shouldn't have survived and the boosted exp has balanced out not using the XP share nicely.

Mudsbray has rocketed to the top of the affection roster in my team though just because I guess using ground type moves gets it dirty every battle and the constant brushing and cleaning has made it adore me.

Getting those rainbow beans at the Pelago also lets you max out affection in literally trivial time. I just caught a trumbeak, and one rainbow bean and a few normal beans then a couple of pats and cleans and its already at 4 hearts.

I'd say so. Last time I played gen1 (the Virtual Console releases) I beat Brock with a team of lv7 shitters. Leech Seed went a long way in securing the win, but even if I had chosen something other than Bulba all it would have taken would have been a couple Potions used during the battle while everyone wears the rock fuckers down with repeated Leers and Tackles.
>>
>>30056897

It helps that Onix is a shit.
>>
>>30055974
>It's signature move being 2-turn was also a huge turn-off
It's one turn, it just has negative priority and has an added effect if your opponent attacks you with a contact move (burn status).
>>30056922
Yeah, it's fine for an early game boss enemy but that thing is really a shit. If you Growl it a couple times, Tackle and Bind won't do shit, so the only way it deals real damage to you is by using Bide, and we all know how to deal with that (don't attack while it's charging up). If it uses Screech and you start fearing Tackle/Bind again, just switch (which is why it's useful to have a full team of six by this point). And if you really feel like wasting time on grinding, even Charmander lays it low as soon as it learns Ember, because Onix's Special is just that shit. To speak nothing of the other two starter choices or Confusion Butterfree (also of note, Butterfree doesn't learn Confusion until lv12 in Red/Blue, so once again more grinding involved if you're not feeling the death-by-a-thousand-Tackles strat)
>>
>>30056897
That's why I used Fire Red/Leaf Green, not Red/Blue. At least his Onix uses STAB moves in Gen III.
>>
>>30053545
I didn't have a hard time with Wishwashi. Had a level 20 Dartrix+Dire Hit. Fuck the Alomomola though.

The Salazzle fight left 5 of my squad fainted and my Dartrix with 2 HP. Maybe I shouldn't have overthought the Marowak questions like 5 times.
>>
>>30057081
I also replayed FireRed recently (after VC Red in fact), but I honestly don't remember anything about the Brock fight in that run, even though I must have been at similar levels. I think I recycled the Leech Seed + Growl part of my strategy and just let Mankey handle the rest.
>>
>>30053545
My Dartrix with Razor Leaf handled this no problem. Nevermind that it was left at 1HP and I had to use a Dire Hit... Thank god for that crit ratio
>>
>>30056203
>only turn it on if I go to a level and find I'm below the wild pokemon level.
At that point, isn't it just better to catch the wild Pokemon and swap them into your team? That's what I would do at least.
>>
I deliberately tried to challenge myself and not use my Pikachu (19) for the Wishiwashi fight, literally got crushed. Torracat (23), Croconaw (20), Jangmo-o (18), Vulpix-A (18) got wrecked. It was a little too easy with Pikachu though. T-Wave, Electro Ball, Electro Ball, ded.

Still, I'm definitely happy with the difficulty still far, I don't get all the complaining that was happening when the game leaked.

Snorlax was probably either 19, 20, or 21 at the time.

>>
>>30057519
Snorlax is pretty OP at that point in the game, it's balanced for your team consisting of first or second stage shitmons
>>
>>30053545
Granted I'm only 2 islands in but none of these totem challenges have been that hard for me yet. Not even Lurantis. Haven't had one pokemon faint during any of them so far.

>>
>>30057423
Thats more or less how I've been playing the totem battles. I use the rest of my team and see how they do and then save my ace for the finish if necessary. Its been fun so far, makes the boss fights feel like something out of the better eras of the anime.

>>30057519
Aside from Snorlax definitely being stronger than most things you'd normally have at that level, a lot of the difficulty of the Wishiwashi fights seems to depend on whether Alomomola comes out to play or not.

I think a lot of people are experiencing a disconnect with their experiences. A lot of fags go in blind and pick up whatever pokemon they want and those are the ones in disbelief bitching about difficulty, as I'm pretty sure every other game you can do that ez. The fags saying these fights are easy are the ones who either looked up shit or got spoiled etc it seems to me generally speaking. I'm sure some anons just picked the right mons before these fights or whatever coincidentally of course, but lets not kid ourselves about how thats a majority. I'm just glad that for once people are having to do some form of strategy in one of these mainline games for the first time in awhile.
>>
>>30058052
They hasn't been a breeze every time, but I've never lost. They give you warning on what type you'll be going against before you do it. I try to keep a diverse enough team going throughout and I have been a bit over-leveled though honestly.
>>
>>30054840
Pretty sure that (None) in the pastebin means they have whatever random moves they learn near that level, since the rest of the moves is "customized".
>>
>>30058052
>>30058123
to add, I've been in both boats. I was overleveled because I didn't know Grubbin was on route 1 and I was soloing using Rowlett up til I just beat the first Trial. Found Grubbin and was leveling it against trainers. I then found myself on level or a getting really close to the trainers levels and when the Kahuna showed up, I was 3 levels under. Granted it wasn't a hard fight but that has happened when I catch a new pokemon I want for my team I tend to get underleveled due to not grinding up and having to grind later on i.e. Mimikyu kicked my ass the first go round so I grinded. Wishiwashi got Charjabug'd. So I get what you're both saying.
>>
>>30058131
No, there are just lots of trainers without full movesets. There was a bit of a scare one day when an anon posted a thread about using Z-Disable on two consecutive trainers and being horrified that it caused them to struggle to death. They thought the move had disabled everything, but the truth was that both trainers had Pokemon who should have had 4 moves but instead had deleted all but 1.

The reason is pretty clearly that they're too fucking lazy to update Pokemon's unbelievably bad, outdated AI, so to make certain trainers actually worth shit they chose to instead eliminate moves so it couldn't randomly select bad ones all the time.
