It's less the specific Pokemon and more that if in, say, 10 years time when Gamefreak are dealing with having 1000+ Pokemon limited to post-game I could see them deciding to shorten certain evolutionary trees rather than removing whole lines or individual mon. The Pidgeot line is far more popular than the Fearown one, but if it came down to it I think GF would be more likely to eliminate Spearow and Pidgey than Spearow and Fearow for example.

Because if ash owns one, then it automatically becomes relevant or iconic enough to warrant not being removed.
The only other reasons it is Iconic is because it is a genwun pokemon, and the alolan form based off of it. But since the alolan form is better than the original, I don't see much purpose of keeping the original other than it's importance to the plot of the anime.

Lucario was an honest mistake. He's a bipedal dog but that's it, he's still 'cool' looking. Furries will jump on literally any dog character in any franchise no matter what.

Just because all three are monkeys doesn't mean they have to look so similar. Compare them to the Elemental Birds, who look related to each other without looking like palette swaps. Had they been designed like the monkeys, all 3 would've been based on the exact same bird, with identical head shapes, beaks and talons.

I actually really like the unevolved forms a bunch, possibly because they remind me of Keroro.

They're goofy but also really really cute. The evolved forms I've always been a bit iffy on, though, but at least they become slightly more distinct.

I'll never accept the elemental palette-swap argument for why they suck, though- not while Eevee is one of the most beloved Pokemon all time. Even if there was only one monkey and one genie most people would probably still hate them because they're 'ugly'. I guarantee that if instead of monkeys the three of them were generic dogs with the same level of variation, they'd have been a hit.
