Always remember to never, and I fucking mean NEVER, assume that a character is "black" just because they have dark skin. It doesn't matter how dark it is, it can easily be a tan.

Not really relevant to the two examples made. Those are two commonalities. Hair texture is universal to the entire race because of how genetically dominant it is while facial structure is in all but a few populations (notably, it's mostly in eastern africa.)

Just because there's a gene pool that includes a variety of features doesn't mean that there aren't features that are universal or nearly so.
