I'm not in the group that says X/Y is garbage but that dex is too big for the region, no Pokémon can be found in more than 2 different places and that makes Kalos feel less alive with too many different ecosystems for a region. They tried it and didn't work out, fair enough, those things happen.

The pokemon available and brock's onix were well-designed for the sake of gameplay

X/y Has none of that - you can get nearly any type you need very early on and after that there is no designing gym encounters to be challenging because the player has everything they might possibly need

fuck off. literally every good RPG released in the last 10 years gives you plenty of choices. see: new vegas. since pokemon games are linear and don't bother with consequences giving you many different pokemon to catch is the next best thing they can do. i can make the monotype team that i want, i can only use sinnoh pokemon in my team if i want. shit like that.

I'm going to assume you've played gen 1 and understand you have multiple pokemon around to overcome brock, but not dozens of them

I'm under the impression that too much choice makes things seem pointless
Like it doesn't matter one bit what pokemon I catch before the first gym in xy because there are just so many that they cannot really predict what you might have and design and appropriate challenge
