Every in-game NPC-trainer who requests a Pokemon for trade almost always gives you a nicknamed Pokemon.
It's also implied many times that many trainers nickname their Pokemon.

The reason you don't see NPC trainers with nicknamed Pokemon in battle is because, and I know this may blow your fucking mind, but the primary audience for this game is children.
They don't want children getting confused and thinking Grimer's Pokemon name "Squiggy" because the first Grimer they happened to encounter was a Trainer's pokemon named Squiggy.

I just switched between mons carefully, keeping one iwanko alive for as long as possible, while it being the lowest level(so it does less damage to my mons) and one hitting the switch in mon. Then killing it when it got close to struggle and then repeating.
I think total i got like 3 more levels on my guys from it but thats all, raticates HP and def really helped out jut by tanking the hits. Took me around 2 1/2 hours of really boring bullshit.

4) Lapras w/ I dunno. I've never used one before.

I'm not sure what to use to fill the rest of the slots. I really wanted to use Jangmo-o but it's available so late into the game. I have a female Salandit I could add and evolve, but I'm already heavily pushing things with the amount of waifumons on my team. Ninetales is another consideration, but I already compromised my "new Pokémon only" rule with Raticate, even if Raticate and Ninetales have new formes.

I originally planned to pick Popplio and soft reset for a female because the other starters were unappealing to me. But when I finally got through the ridiculous ass chain of cut scenes and got a male I said fuck it and boxed it.

Later I put that little cakeboy on the GTS asking for a Scyther because they aren't available until post game. Luckily someone actually did so, and it was a female Adamant one to boot. I dislike using traded mons, so I gave it the Everstone from Llima and bred it with a Grubbin for a fresh one. Then I took a Compound Eyes Butterfree with Thief and went to the school and slaughtered Magnemite until I got a Metal Coat. Bam, evolved. Had it before the third trial.

It's not my fucking fault that Mimikyu, Jangmo-o, and A-Exeggutor are so late in the game. Every new mon I've found so far was a shitmon outside Lycanroc. I'm not going to intentionally use something bad because it's new. They put a whole lot of powerful old mons in the beginning and some shit new ones. Why would I use the bad choices?

I would also use Toxapex, but they made it an absolute pain in the ass to get ahold of one.

Considering it's really far into the game and it's attacking stats (especially special) are garbage I'd say, yes, it's garbage. It gets oneshot by anything physical, and because of it's shit special attack extrasensory isnt gonna do shit vs poisons.
