It all works through the Join Avenue reskin, Festival Plaza.
You have to be in Festival Plaza to send/receive trade/battle requests, meaning you can't be doing other things while you wait for your trading partner (similar to how the WiFi Centre used to work in Gen V). It's a massive step backward.
