It doesn't take long to distribute the games because of how they do it. Basically, before midnight you go in and pay off the game fully and they give you a finalized receipt. Then, everyone is in line based on when they got their finalized receipt. At midnight, they check the receipts and rush people through to be given the game. No matter when you get there, or how many people are there, you'll basically be gone before like 12:15 even. It's very efficient. You don't need to get in line until like 11:30-11:40 either so you can pay off your game then go do some other shit til release.

While waiting for ORAS someone walked across the street to Walmart and came back with cases of red and blue koolaid for everybody, and since Smash Bros was being released the same night the store set up a mini tournament. If a game warrants a midnight release, it's safe to assume they only have the preorders. In some cases there might be extras, but probably not for Pokemon since it's so popular. The preorder system is also there to make the line move quickly since everyone's order is paid off by midnight and it's just a matter of bagging the game and giving it to the next person in line (sometimes using a number on the receipt to determine line order.)
