You use Pokebank.

That's the purpose of Pokebank. To be able to transfer pokemon between generations. Of course once you transfer from X/Y to Sun/Moon, you won't be bringing them back. Because there's no backwards compatibility between the games.

You cannot simply trade between generations. Even though both gens use a 3DS.

You can transfer your 6th Generation pokemon to the Pokebank and then from there, put them in your 7th Generation game. But this is a 1 way street. Pokemon from Sun and Moon CANNOT be brought into any of the 6th Generation games.

That's the ONLY time that trading between gens was allowed. For the 2 ->3 gen there was NOTHING. You were SOL.

For the others, you had to migrate them.

Only between 1st + 2nd Gen games. Everything else was migration.

1-> 2 Time capsule. Actual trading with conditions involved. No 2nd Gen pokemon and no 2nd Gen moves.
2-> 3 NOTHING. You were SOL
3 -> 4 Migration. Only after you beat your 4th gen game.
4 -> 5 Migration. Only after you beat your 5th gen game.
5 -> 6 Poketransfer --> Pokebank. A different form of migration but migration all the same.
6 -> 7 Pokebank. Again. Migration since you can't bring them back.
