Im playing on my o3ds and I haven't really used online other than the festival plaza but I don't believe thats online, regardless I'm buying the real game and just gonna transfer my pokemon over I have 2 3ds' my o3ds and my n3ds they are both homebrewed but my o3ds has CFW so it doesn't really affect me.

unofficial save managers are pretty good and apparently the game is region free regardless.
Also pokemon saves are generally pretty easy to manipulate.
People were actually able to dump their save from physical copies of Red and Blue and inject it into their virtual console version, so that they can later put their oldest pokemon through pokebank.
Absolute worst case scenario people will transfer their pokemon off the save and into the new game's save.
