In Sun and Moon, you can scan a QR code to get a Pokemon registered as "seen" in your Pokedex. You can only scan so much in a certain time frame, after which there's a moderately long cooldown. Anyway, every 10 codes you scan, you can spawn a non-Alolan Pokemon on your current island, which stays there for about an hour or so.

QR doesn't give you the actual dex entry, so I don't think you can, sadly.

It's interesting to note that virtually any QR code will work, though.
