The exact circumstances are headcanon but Guzdad's phrasing of "but I was the one who got beat" pretty much spells out that he was trying to physically discipline Guzma.

That said, I think it went a little more like this.

I think the line between abuse and discipline is a thin one. Maybe a father only grasps his kid's wrist tight enough to leave marks, but if he's yelling and making threats at the same time? If the kid is terrified? That can be pretty mentally scarring.

To the father the situation is "it's just a few hits. It'll make him tough, and he deserved it anyway, and my dad gave me ten times worse". To the child it's "dad hurts me and nothing I do can make him stop and I can't trust him not to hurt me".

I think for this theory you need to consider the weight of expectations. We don't know just how much pressure was put on him to succeed beyond having trophies on display, and this idea that maybe they exchanged a few blows about it. It could be every conversation over dinner, the only interest his parents showed in his hobbies, etc. That kind of thing fucks with a kid.

Here my headcanon on the whole broken golf clubs fiasco.

The golf clubs belong to Guzma's father. And since his father's such a huge golfer, he rarely spends time with Guzma, to the point where Guzma gets jealous and acts out trying to get his father's attention.

But we all know that acting out and behaving badly is no way to get your parent's attention. Maybe it gets to a point where the father has had enough of Guzma's behavior and lashes out at him, and in turn Guzma breaks his father's golf clubs as an act of vengeance.

Y'know. Just speculating.

I'm not that big a fan of Guzma but I see these threads constantly and I'm glad you're all having fun and bonding over your love of ya boy

I can see Guzma being quite the bully as a child, possibly taking his anger out on others in order to deal with his shitty home life.
I wonder if he picked on kukui, and that's why kukui seems ok with taking hits from Pokemon, because he's been dealt worse blows before.

I think that Guzma genuinely liked Pokemon battling, but there's a thousand things they could have potentially clashed over. School, friends, other hobbies -- what it comes down to, in my mind, is that his father didn't get him on some fundamental level and instead of stepping back and going "this approach isn't working, I should try something different" he went "I am the father and my son is going to listen to me, dammit". And Guzma doesn't help the situation because hey, he's a kid. So he's standoffish and distrustful and lies about where he's going after school, maybe a little sullen and rude when he thinks he can afford it. And that only makes his father take everything all the more personally and makes him all the more determined to squeeze this attitude out of his child.

It's pretty easy for parent/child relationships to sour. All it takes is enough stubbornness.

Also, I'm not usually part of the whole "let me join the evil team" camp, but I want nothing more than to be able to basically play a Jr. Skull Grunt. There is a very big line between abuse and discipline. Even grabbing the wrest and yelling loudly is not mentally scarring, it depends on the situation. You just tried to run in front of a car and your mother has you by wrist, screaming? Yeah, it feels bad in the moment, but you'll get over it quick. Your parents are constantly grabbing and throwing you around, dragging you, yelling at you simply because they're upset and not because you've done anything? That's quite different.
