By the end game with it on, the common trainers were about 10ish levels under me. However, any rival battles or major battles in general, had Pokemon that were either my level or just a little below.

My Nuzlocke run of Moon, with EXP Share off, involved more grinding than I honestly ever recall needing to do since at least Gen2. The trainers ramp up in level really quickly relative to the experience they give.

This was definitely my experience. And on a Nuzlocke run, going into totem fights that start with +1 on all stats, that's a fucking death sentence.

I'm doing a casual Sun run now with EXP Share on, so I guess we'll see how hard it is.

My advice? Mix it up. Turn it on if you need it. Turn it off if you get over-leveled.

I've had it on most of the game, and as a result I'm over-leveled, which sucks. This is likely because I've been very enthusiastic about catching wild pokemon though (about 90 in the box).

There are some here who found challenge in X Y, yet it could be nuzlocked without losing a single Pokémon. I would absolutely imagine this will be the same, regardless of what those who have the game have stated.

that is not really how it works, you can either grind or TRY to beat the gyms/trials/E4 with an underleveled team by exploiting weaknesses and moves, the exp share removes fun struggle.

I still remember beating Pearl with my shitty Mismagious/lopunny/Glaceon/Drapion team which was stuck in the shitty 45 to 50 range and luckily beat the E4 and cynthia with dizzy punch confuse BS, drapion toxic, glaceon hail blizzards after many tries, it was my most fun pokiman experience.

It's still going to be a very casual rpg, even if you turn off the exp share, turn on set battle, and avoid z moves. There's a significant level spike between the story climax and the league challenge, but you can still pull it off without grinding if you're not retarded.

My entire team was in their 49-50s during the E4 and did just fine, and one of them was a fucking Pyukumuku.

Playing with Exp Share off, I think the game has a really weird level spike once we get to the 4th island. My team was just around the same level as wild pokemon, regular trainers were already outleveling me. When I got to the Hapu fight her pokemon were 5 full levels over mine.
