Working a controller was (not very, but still) physical, it was tactile, and it used muscle memory. Tapping this and that on casual smartphone and tablet games is a far drop from that older gaming culture.

Obviously game content is different too - casual games were meant to give busy normie adults a cheap and easy way to kill spare time. The modern freemium game evolved from casino/gambling body as, and weren't originally intended for children. Games for kids should be more in-depth, involved. It should give them a world to jump into like a good book. This is why Zelda, Pokémon and other long-standing franchises became what they are. Adults didn't play too many games back when those games were first making names for themselves.

The late eighties to late nineties are were something of a golden age for quality gaming, especially compared to modern state of the industry, aside from certain (mostly indie) devs. To again compare games to books, those from the former are intelligent, exploratory literature from masters like Twain and Wilde, while modern games are, for the most part, are about as artistic and insightful as an issue of Maxim.

I got through Blue at age 9, but I was a readfag from an early age and my grandpa got me into RPGs the year before Pokémon even came out in NA... Still though, it can't be that bad.

I had a Japanese friend when I was younger, he had moved here a couple years prior. We traded GBC games. Can't remember what I gave him but he gave me a Japanese Medabots game (Medarot 2 to be exact, the one that the English release for GBA is basically an FRLG of). I couldn't read shit, obviously, but after playing around I figured out the battle system and the menus, and if I got lost in the game I would literally just talk to everyone and try every door.

To be fair, I think kids nowadays don't spend a lot of time playing games because back when I was a kid if you got a game you were expected to play it to completion because it was the only one you might get.

But even then, we all did stupid shit. For example, first time I played Emerald I couldn't get past the footprint guy for a day or two and had to ask a friend to tell me how to go beat May to get past him. Then of course there was that time I grinded up a Linoone to Level 92 with my other mons at around the 50's to beat the elite four.

As a kid I always had a team of six going - these days, since maybe halfway through gen III, on my playthroughs of the story I usually accumulate about 12 good pokes and train them on a rotation, then split them into two teams for two different E4 runs. I sort of remained stuck on Pokémon Yellow (Goddammit I was 6, I barely could read the text!), and couldn't beat Brock because I thought grinding was boring and kept losing my money agaist him. I remember I got to the point I couldn't buy a single Pokéball. When finally reached the end of Mt. Moon I was so happy.
Nex, a few years late, it came Pokémon Leaf Green (yes I skipped Gen2, but played them later as Gen2=best gen) where I got to the end but, kinda forgot to beat the League?
After that Emerald was a smooth sailing.

I never beat gen 1 or 2 without rare candy trick / legendaries as a child. the first one I beat legit was sapphire in middle school. you fucking suck at video games when you're 8 years old dawg.
