I was referring to when RBY was released and GREEN(or whatever it is in in Japanese symbols) appeared as a default name for him in the Japanese RGBY but that was replaced with BLUE for the Western release.
There was literally no reason to change his name from Green to Blue.
There was no reason for that to happen, and that mistake still haunts the localization team to this day.

90% of the world didn't have Green Version.

Default names are always tied to the version you are playing, which means the entire world (except Japan) would have been introduced to the Rival with the default name "Blue".

The difference between Ethan and Blue is that Blue was previously in the Gen 1 games (and remakes) and then re-appeared in other games, so they needed to maintain the continuity. If Ethan had showed up at any point in RSE/DPPt as Gold, he would have been called Gold in HGSS. But seeing as they were able to revisit his first ever appearance, they could give him an actual name.
