Tried this last night, maybe it was a bad time, or maybe just nobody cares, but let's give it another go.
Let's pretend Pokemon simplified basestats down to a 5 point system. How would this affect some of your favorites? Who suddenly got on par with pokemon they'd normally be overshadowed by? Who suddenly has a lot more competition than they had before?
Also I made provisions for a kind of 5+ level to denote those that greatly exceeded the even balance of the 5 point system.
So, for example, Hariyama and Blissey both now share a 5+ in HP, although Haryama's was 155, and Blissey's was 255.
On a narrower scale, Slaking, Machamp, Hitmonlee, and Rampardos now all share in a solid 5 points of Attack.
Ledian is still totally useless though.
other little anomalies: Serperior and Midday-Lyrcanroc are also now a point apart in speed, 5 and 4 respectively, where they had been nearly comparable before.
Wouldnt this just make it where it takes longer for your pokemon to become good

Not when it shifts everything downscale. Competative viability is proportional afterall. This just changes that proportionality slightly. Kind of like grading on a curve. Starters for example would progress like this,
>Bulbasaur line
HP:2→3→3
AT: 2→3→3
DF:2→3→3
SA:3→3→4
SD:3→3→4
SP:2→3→3
>Charmander line
HP:2→3→3
AT: 2→3→3
DF:2→3→3
SA:3→3→4
SD:2→3→4
SP:3→3→4
>Squirtle line
HP:2→3→3
AT: 2→3→3
DF:3→3→4
SA:2→3→4
SD:3→3→4
SP:2→3→3
Squirtle and Wartortle's Defenses are comparable to Venusaur's and Charizard's. Considering where the upper limit is if anything the NFE pokemon are better sooner this way.

Using a less steady growth pattern, Caterpie for example would develop like this
HP:2→2→3
AT: 2→1→2
DF:2→2→2
SA:1→1→4
SD:1→1→3
SP:2→2→3
with attack dipping as Metapod but stable overall, while the special stats would rocket as Butterfree. A 4 in Special Attack puts it on par with Greninja.
Similarly with something useless like Hoppip,
HP:2→2→3
AT: 2→2→2
DF:2→2→3
SA:2→2→2
SD:2→3→4
SP:2→3→4
For the sake of readily available comparison, Charmander has an extra point over Hoppip when looking at Special Attack -v- Special Defense, but from Skiploom-v-Charmeleon on to Jumpluff-v-Charizard SD-v-SA is 1:1.
