They never optimized the game for having the trainers on screen, they replaced the third pokemon on each side of a triple battle with the trainers :^)

Considering they never did anything with the altenrative formats, I don't see why it's a big deal. I would love a game where you walk up to NPCs not knowing if you're in for singles, doubles, triples or rotation.

Yeah that sucks, but at least they were an option for maison and online battle. I played gen6 a lot just because of the maison triples. It was fucking awesome to use a team of six too.
