well there's a bunch of locations that don't show on the map (forests, tunnels, etc) and some of the areas are a bit hidden (secret tunnel leading to a cave, to a beach on first island/the whole desert part in poni island etc)

Well, Hawaii is more rural than Japan, NY and France, I think it is expected less cities. Principally considering that most trials (I didn't read spoilers about them so IDK if not all) do not take places in cities, unlike Gyms.

There are Pokecenters out in the middle of nowhere in some places. Pokecenter doesnt necessarily imply town.

I dont think the number ties to how rural it is, Kanto is still probably one of the most urban regions.

I dont necessarily find it to be a problem either, since I always felt Hoenn and Sinnoh had a couple useless towns. But you do have to make sure you dont fuck up the towns since you have a smaller number.

This along with hearing that a lot of buildings are inaccessible does have me a little worried though

Guys who does it compare size wise to Kalos?

Also are those buildings in the demo that were locked off with blatant doors still closed?

yes those are still closed. literally decorative buildings even though theres only 9 buildings in that whole city.

Kalos had 16 towns, but a bunch didnt have much to them (Aquacordue, Geosenge) and the routes were pretty short and straightforward. Overall Kalos still felt a little small.

I'm actually getting more and more convinced the next Pokemon game is a Kanto revisit (sequel most likely). Mainly because Game Freak can't code and so a region any bigger will be too much for the 3DS with our current scale and models.

Yeah. There is absolutely no way we'll be getting Sinnoh remakes next as Sinnoh is the biggest region and so way too big for 3DS, and we wouldnt start a new console Gen on the Switch with a remake/sequel.

I havent played the games but it looks like SM sets up a revisit to Kanto either way
