Singles is only balanced because smogon's tier system exists. If singles was just battle spot singles where anything but legendaries could go it would be imbalanced and centralized as fuck. Doubles is inherently more balanced.

in doubles, you have up to 2 pokemon with 4 moves each that can be directed at 3 targets, plus 2 partners to switch in to. that's 48 possible actions in a given turn on your end.
compare this to singles where you have 4 moves and 5 switch-ins, a mere 9 options at best.

doubles requires much more analysis and thought and is therefore more interesting.

VGC 2014 and now VGC 2017 are restrictive enough that you should be able to build teams even using your "bros". VGC '15 and especially '16 were shit because they let in way too many downright broken mons like Kangaskhan, Smeargle and the genies.

If you want to get started with doubles there no better time than at the start of a new generation.

The only reason why I refuse to play Doubles is because most of my favorites are either completely unusable or simply bad in Doubles. Give me a good use for something like Mandibuzz or Slowbro and I'll try it out.
