The characterization is some of the best in the franchise. Story is kind of the least epic in a while since it's very personal, the main character might as well have been Lillie.

The characters are definitely a notch above previous games and even the Trial Captains and Kahunas feel more fleshed out and have relationships and interactions among themselves. "Best ever" is a bit of a reach. The characters weren't terrible, but the execution was. The game forced them down your throat with cutscenes that would put Heavy Rain to shame, and the interactions that counted were too seldom. There should have been more Gladion as well as Guzma. For a game so long I don't see how moments with other characters were so rushed. Lillie was the only character that got movie worthy screen time.

Honestly, the cons outway the pros.

Alola is small, less towns than most games and routes are smaller.
Trials replace gyms but there's only 7 trials, making it smaller still
Cutscenes out the ass
Majority of trainers have 1 or 2 Pokemon
Both instances of infiltrating the evil team bases were incredibly short and easy
Due to Alola's smallness, the lack of postgame is even worse.
New chaining method is annoying (Unless you want to wait ages for Pokemon to call for help, you need to False Swipe them. After enough time they'll break your chain by Struggling to death)
Removal of triple and rotation battles
No National Dex, hidden behind a paywall. (I know $5 a year is nothing, but it's the principle.)
