Even in the first games there was an enemy team, so you can't tell me there were no cliches there. While they weren't being as pushy with the story as they are now, there hasn't been any game that just lets you be a trainer and catch them all/aim to be the champion.

I feel like I'm in the minority, but I enjoy story and characters in my games.
Even if it is mostly basic stuff like in Pokémon's case.
I don't really understand some people's hateboner for every bit of character interaction because "it's stopping me from playing the game", I don't see this kind of thing the same way I guess.

The only time it annoyed me was in XY but that was mostly due to the fact I could not get into neither the characters or the story (when they remembered they had one). But it was more of a "I don't like these people and don't care for this evil team" thing than annoyance over dialogues happening like may others have.

I don't really mind. I enjoyed the recurring interactions with Kukui and Hau. But this character in particular is the most shameless, shallow form of pandering that I've ever seen. It's like they've shoved every "moe" trait into her and then put her into your face the whole game.

Characters such as Cheren and Bianca are much more balanced.

A silent protagonist can take the lead in a story driven game. There's lots of games that do that. It is more difficult to pull off than focusing the story on their companions though, which is why Gamefreak probably prefers doing so.

That said I don't disagree with what you said either, it can be done right and I'd say BW and SM for the most part did. There are problems with it but I don't think they're as grave as people make them out to be.
It's just that the stories are pretty basic to begin with, which some people won't take, but the execution is ok.

I think some people get different impressions from what the 2D games did and what the 3D do because in the old games the scenes were mostly text and thus they could be blazed through if the player wanted. The 3D games tend to try building atmosphere and pacing the scenes differently, so someone who's not invested can't read it fast and get over with it, which I can understand being annoying (as several moments of XY were to me).

The protag is mostly dragged around by N and shoved in the role of a hero to clash with him and see if his worldview is right. The whole game is based around that..

I do not think that is so different from S/M being based around the protagonist becoming friends with Lillie (and Gladion, I guess) and helping her situation, It's just a different focus, but the fact remains that the character whom the story revolves around puts the protagonist into a particular position, and it mostly revolves to how the main character affects them.
