I haven't played neither, but pretty much Lusamine grooms him enough to use him and his team to do their dirty work, so she can go into a wormyhole and fuck all of the UB-01s. I guess Team Skull disbands after that, and Guzma redeems himself and is one of the people you can battle in that Battle Tree in the end. That's, at least, what I've gathered.

Guzma is in love with Lusamine, because she is the first who considers him strong and not a failure as a trainer and person. So Guzma does everything in his power to please Lusamine and Aether with his team. She and Guzma run in a UB portal when defeated and you go "rescue" them with Solgaleo/Lunala's help. Lusamine just wants to live there forever, but Guzma is scared of UB-01's mind controlling toxins and what Lusamine is becoming, to the point of not listening to him at all anymore. It's implied Lusamine dresses and gives him haircuts to make him look exactly like UB-03 because she is obsessed with UBs, that's why she looks like UB-02 and why she forces Lillie to dress like UB-01.

I feel like he leans more towards early 20s. He and Kukui can't be that far apart in age, with Kukui leaning a bit older. If we're assuming that they both failed becoming captains somewhere in their mid to late teens, then Guzma could be in his early twenties with Kukui being mid or late.

We don't know when Guzma met Lusamine, or when he met Plumeria and formed Team Skull, but such grooming and manipulation could be years old by the time the game rolls around.

I'm trying to find an alternate meaning for this, but it makes absolutely no sense that his father would challenge him to a Pokemon battle when even young Guzma was a tournament-winning battler and they don't even seem to have Pokemon in the house.

On top of that, Guzmom's "I'm sure my boy didn't do anything bad" attitude implies a woman not willing to acknowledge negative things happening in front of her...like a husband whose discipline might be a little overly physical.

I generally don't try to inject these kinds of headcanons but I honestly think it's the most logical conclusion. Guzma's whole "desperate for respect from adults" thing doesn't jive with an idyllic home life, anyway.

So I suppose the timeline went something like this:

>teenage Guzma has clashes with his father and sublimates his anger into Pokemon battling instead (see: his close relationship with a wimpy Pokemon and high skill from a young age)
>because he's focused on crushing the enemy rather than trying to teach them something, he fails his trial captain test
>has a falling out with his friend Kukui (I suspect Kukui either didn't understand Guzma's home issues or didn't help, but admit that this is solely headcanon based on how fucking pissed Guzma is at him)
>rails about failing the test, father tries to physically discipline him for it, Guzma strikes back, wins, and books ass

There's a strong does of headcanon in here, but it's the best way I have of trying to link all the stuff we know together. No idea how the Lusamine/Skull order of events went, but there is this interesting tidbit from...somewhere:
