Depends on the image format.

.png is great at compressing images with many solid colors (such as vectors) without any loss. For photos and heavily shaded and detailed images it won't compress as well, and filesize goes up.

Plus, with any advanced image editing format such as Photoshop or similar you can determine the actual compression yourself when saving, if you take a .png and save it as a .jpg at the highest setting, you could pretty much not tell the difference.
