You need three types of Pokemon in this game:

High (2000+) CP attackers (taking down enemy gyms)
High (2000+) CP defenders (putting in friendly gyms)
Low (700-1200) CP attackers (prestiging friendly gyms)

The only group which needs the highest CP that they can get are the naturally high CP defenders.
Of those defenders, you really only need to power up 1) the high CP defenders who can actually pose a challenge because they take so goddamn long to beat (Lapras and Snorlax) and 2) the highest CP overall (Dragonite) to be the last man standing in a gym to their absolute maximum.

I just spent 28 minutes chasing a 1312 arcanine (71.1% with fire fang/flamethrower at least)
The sightings are so screwed up that when I was near him he disappeared from sightings, so I went the wrong way for ages before deciding to check the spot where he actually was as a last resort even though it didnt show him on sightings there
the list wasnt even full, it had 6, 3, and 1 pokemon on it at varying distances nearby him, but wouldnt show him up
this was near the start of the trek too, so it wasn't that he was about to despawn

anyway in other news I hatched a 91.1% (14/15/12) charmander while doing it
wasted 18 ultraballs trying to catch the arcanine though, he kept breaking out and jumping my shots

If you're powering things up, ideally you want to power up only the best ones you can find because they have the most potential.
IVs can be thought of as bonus stats on top of the base stats (thats what they are essentially)
in regards to training attackers, whatever you happen to have that also has good moves.
say you find a 700cp bulba with vine whip/power whip but low IVs. he's still worth keeping because he's really useful to kill water pokemon with if you need something at that CP range

Basically:
Good pokemon, good moves, good IVs: worth powering up for a big attacker (to clear gyms) or gym defender

good pokemon, good moves, bad IVs, but mid CP: worth keeping to train gyms, but not worth powering up because he'll never reach the potential of others with high IVs

My personal favorites from group 3 are Jolteon, Parasect, and a low CP Vaporeon. I also like to use Marowak and Nidoking because they were my bros when I first got Blue version but they don't always work.

IVs matter for group 2 mostly. If you catch a fully evolved Pokemon in the wild with a 800-1200 CP, only its moveset really matters for attacking. If you're evolving something then good IVs are better but its final moveset is most important. If you're powering something up to put in a gym then almost perfect IVs will get you higher in the gym which is what really matters.

i am not lazy, i am 40k exp away from level 31, i caught tons of dragonites and snorlax, I am only missing lapras, porygon and the regionals on my pokedex, I already have 900 bag space, 450 pokemon space and 450 coins.

I had to wait 2 months for some gym stability, this event made the old spoofers come back and made their job easier, now every gym in the city is red again, I don't care anymore to be honest, I could just claim 10 coins per day again but to be honest the app takes a big toll on my phone.

but also like he said, there are tons of variables at play

If you look at my simulation here, comparing [vine whip/power whip] with [vine whip/solar beam], although power whip has a higher dps than solar beam for its time cast, solar beam ends up dealing more damage in a prolonged fight.
This is because using power whip + vine whips to fill the duration you're casting the solar beam, the solar beam does more damage for the full period

That being said, some might prefer power whip over solar beam due to its shorter cast time as you're not left defenseless for as long as you are for solar beam.

A lot of it will come down to personal preference

I got a Snorlax and a Lapras off of back to back 10k eggs back in July, I was like, Lv12 or 13, have had like 1 10k egg since (I'm now Lv23) and I have yet to see a Lapras in the wild (caught 4 Snorlax but they were all shit). Powered them up all the way and they're now capped and still my top mons (85%+ IVs and ideal movesets too).

10k eggs were a hell of a lot more common back then, Niantic probably changed that in order to decrease the amount of Lapras/Snorlax/Dragonite.

Fuck that was great. I remember being on the opposite side with one of these yellow fags. Looking at me completely smug in his car while I tried to do my best to take it down, but he trained it up much faster. I'm really loving this new gym system more and more. I'm still pretty short on potions right now to take on every gym in this town, but soon I'll make them all suffer

I think it's time for me to quit for good. Spent hours yesterday walking around having an amazing time, but I cannot deny my addiction to this game, my depression and real world problems any longer. Thank you pogo, and thank you guys for being the source of my escapism and joy for the last 4 months. I don't know what comes next, all I want right now is to die for being such a degenerate. But I hope letting go of this game can get me to move forward onto a better path.

So should i use an incense alone while biking to hoard mons for mass evolving or are there better uses for it? Used my first one at lvl 22 earlier today, caught like 30 mons which is nice, but is that the best i can do with it?
