I'm assuming there would be only one of each UB in the game that you can get, but apparently they're not legendaries in whatever dimension they come out of. I saw a screenshot of Lusamine somewhere on /vp/ surrounded by a bunch of Nihilegos like they were just normal fucking pokemon.

So pseudo-legendaries?

You know I think Ultra Beasts were created by a one of the newer Pokemon designers like James Turner. They were originally intended to be actual Pokemon, nothing special. My theory is Sugimori didn't like designs and thought they didn't have to Pokemon feel, but Ohmori did and wanted them in game. So to use these designs Ohmori came up with the idea "Ultra Beasts" and the backstory that Ultra Beasts are Pokemon from another dimension.

You say they're as bad as if someone had just drawn lines at random, but it's obvious the Ultra Beasts have a theme and every element in them conveys said theme. The point of the Ultra Beasts is not fitting into the mold of what makes a pokemon an actual pokemon in our dimension. Some look like regular pokemon while others are completely alien. It's meant to resemble those multiverse stories where certain alternate dimensions are more similar to ours while others get progressively more and more alien.

I agree, UBs are the worst thing of SM, when i thought they couldnt make something more "not pokemon" than fucking megas they bring out these fucks. And it's not like all of them are bad designs, but almost all of them dont look like pokemon, they are SMT demons, at this point Yokai Watch ghosts look more like pokemon than pokes themselves. If they actually werent pokemon i would have been fine, but as it is, UBs are the worst thing that has happened to pokemon.

Ultra Beasts are Pokemon that are from another dimension. They're like "evil" Legendaries.

They also come from random wormholes that pop-up, which was mostly unknown up until now.

I could overlook most Dex entries and shit about Ghosts or Legendaries, but this shit is legitimately the most disturbing thing about Pokemon to date knowing you could end up missing or dead because a random hole pops up.

I'm fine with them looking outlandish and clear "not of this dimension". However, they must be identifiable as Pokémon, sharing some small common characteristics with them. UB-01 and UB-02 Absorption do it quite well, why can't the others be like that? Why the break of consistency?

And real life comparisons are irrelevant when you're dealing with games and other fiction works.

Comparisons with real life are completely irrelevant when dealing with fictional works. Fiction doesn't work by the same rules.

For example, the green furless alien dog would be crap science (anything remotely resembling life on Earth would be), but it's still fine if you want to set up a fantasy-like universe for your game or whatever.

My main issue is that they don't fit. I would be fine with those very same designs for something that is not a Pokemon, OR for Pokemon from outer dimension to have designs still resembling Pokemon.

If you want another example, grab the most typical Digimons and try to fit them into Pokemon. They still won't fit, in the same way these UBs don't.


Design-wise, all three are interesting... they would make cool electronic enemies in another game.

I wont say the series had a perfect harmony when it came to design, with many varying to big degrees, but somehow there was still a small sense of uniformity and union to them, UBs throw that into the trash, it's the equivalent of jumping the shark when it comes to designs.

If they acted different from pokemon in some way, that would be justifiable, since they wouldnt be pokes but something else entirely, but they act the same, and are called the same, and therefore are the same, ruining pokemon designs forever.

You can take a neopet with clothes, accessories and all and call it a pokemon.
You can take a Monster Hunter beast and call it pokemon
You can take it angewoman and call it a pokemon

UBs opened the doors, there is not a "good pokemon design" anymore, since anything can be a pokemon.

What i'm trying to say, is that UBs are not designed to inspire feelings of "cool" and "familiarity".
Theyr porpouse is to inspire feelings of "unsettlement", "creepyness", "otherworldliness", and "primordial repulsion".
Humans are, generally, creeped out by a set of facial features or lack thereof, strange and unsettling movements, and warped body proportions.
Prime case, bamboo woman. that thing is freaky.
long and thin neck with little to no facial features, but still moves around in a human manner. that can cause to some people a feeling of extreme creepyness. Usually, this is referred to as "uncanny valley". Since everyone, mainly, has theyr own "trigger" for "uncanny valley", they made different kinds of these creatures, all with proportions and movemente that, at least untill you get used to it, are "creepy" and "eerie".
Bamboo has creepy neck and face
Origami has creepy body rigidity and movements
Electric wire guy creeped out many for it's lack of facial features
of course, jellyfish and 02s are less creepy, but that's mainly because they were to be used as "advertisement"
