I don't know, the level curve is weird.
I'm doing a run without exp share, in battle items and mode set. My levels are similar to the opponent's, in fact the first trial captain just wrecked me.

I had exp share on. A lot of battles felt close, but the only time I actually lost was the final Kukui fight. It took me 4 attempts to get a good strategy down.
