Regular Zygarde is Jormungandr which is a serpent which is wrapped around Midgard (our world) with it's tail in it's mouth (ouroboros) and when he releases his tale Ragnarok (the death of the gods - he kills Thor as well) beings, insinuated in Zygarde being a dormant protector who emerges when the ecosystem is threatened.
In it's dog form it represents Fenrir - who kills Odin during Ragnarok. And it's Dragon Ball villain form is representative of Loki's third child, Hel, who presides over... Essentially Hell. Across these forms there's a clear in game narrative - folklore based, obviously, like every Pokemon - that should Zygarde sense trouble brewing he'll essentially annihilate it dramatically. Then there's the cells and stuff and I can't tell you the specifics on that. There's nothing about specifically fending off anything in battle, it's just folklore. Whether or not it is 'competitively viable' against another, loosely related Legendary Pokemon doesn't really matter at all.

It's even worse then you think, dog zygarde has half of worm zygarde's health stat, upon reaching 50% HP it becomes mech Zygarde. Mech zygarde has double worm zygarde's HP stat, but since it can only get there when it's half health as dog that means it basically will have the same HP stat as normal worm zygarde. Unless it heals which I don't remember if it does or doesn't, it's literally gonna be normal zygarde but slower and with slightly more special attack.

Pokemon designs are simple intentionally and are meant to be easily understood by 8 year olds. It doesn't take much effort to figure them out. I decipher properly challenging concepts as part of my work, so this is entirely automatic.
