The problem with designs like these is that they're trying too hard to transition from the first stage and third stage.

What I like about some mid stages is that they have their own "character" while still linking the first and third stage with subtler traits instead of just being a fusion of the two.

Pretty sure there was an interview somewhere that Gamefreak stated they'll would make the final evolutions of the starters more "surprising" nowadays than just the middle stages with growth spurts. Which is why Decidueye and Interneroar are big changes from the middle form and Primarina is a more "refined" Brionne.
