>>

Someone did the front sprites for Gen 3 and 4 without the backsprites, then someone else did backsprites for Gen 3. They plan to do Gen 4 but haven't had the time.

While I'm posting Hoenn resources for OP, here's some music covers.

https://soundcloud.com/mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm-1/sets/gbc-8-bit-hoenn

The code to each song is in that song's description. They're intended to be used with the pokecrystal disassembly, which I'll link just in case OP doesn't know about it, since it's 10000x easier to use than hacking the traditional way.

It was a collaborative sprite sheet, and the colors mark the quality of the sprite and whether it needs to be improved or replaced. I can't remember everything but light blue meant it was 100% good, yellow and green meant it had some issues (can't remember which was more serious), and red needed to be replaced.

I hate this fucking image. It takes the whole "Gen 1 had bad sprites XD" stigma and uses it as excuse to make shoddy, half-assed pixel work. Gen 1 sprites weren't NEARLY as bad as some of the shit in this picture.

You are a godsent. I knew aboutghe disassembly but not exactly sure how to use it? Thinking of starting with the pokemon and then maps first.

Correct me if im wrong but wouldnt putting the new music take up alot of space?
>>
>>29685931
You want to look at https://github.com/pret/pokecrystal/blob/master/INSTALL.md to get everything you need to install. It's not a hard process but I've seen some people get confused at what you need to install so if you have any questions I'll try to answer assuming I'm still awake, and the link I just posted has a link inside to an IRC chat that can also help if I'm not around. Just make sure you're able to build it before editing anything, that way if you mess something up you'll know it's because of a change you did and not because you messed up the installation.

That priority order sounds good to me. Mapping is like the only thing you need a tool for that isn't part of the disassembly installation, though, so I'll also give you this link to a disassembly-based map editor.
https://github.com/yenatch/crowdmap

>Correct me if im wrong but wouldnt putting the new music take up alot of space?
Nah. If it was .wav files or something it would, but music on the Game Boy is sequenced (think of it like a MIDI but simpler). I'm not sure how much each song takes up when compressed, but it's definitely not a lot and you can remove songs from the original game that you wouldn't use if you really need to make room. Graphics will take up a lot more space than music in your ROM.

This might answer a question that I've always had about all the older gameboy/gbc games,

What would the total grid size of the world map and all of the explorable areas would be?

But it's a little hard to parse from this image at this resolution. Is there a bigger world map image of this Hoenn demake or of another gbc era game?
>>
>>29685597
You can see IN the picture how wrong you are. The JP sprites were spectacularly bad.

On mobile now so not able to build it until later , looks simple enough , i assume i just have to download everything and compile it? I'll message on the irc chat if i have questions thanks a lot!

For maps , would it be possible to rip them from the big hoenn map demake posted above? Would save a lot of time rather than doing all from a scratch.

This dude also has the character sprites, so all OP needs is to probably look through his pics and you should have everything you need, plus the Pokemon sprites from this thread. Just use the GSC battle screen, bag screen, party screen, mini sprites, etc since it's all generic at that point. If he's missing maps like maybe the Regi caves, just find a GSC map Sprite sheet and build it from there

they're bad but they're still cohesive designs. You have to remember until gen 4 most Pokemon were designed in pixel before they were drawn out on paper, shit like Tyrogue, Hitmontop, Victini etc. could never fly. Some however are very good, for instance Feraligatr is a great demake and would fit right at home in gen 1.

If you're still around, you basically download and install a program called cygwin (it's a program that lets you use Linux commands in Windows), and then type certain commands in cygwin that will set everything else up for you atuomatically. It's a lot better to do it as instructed than to just download things because it will give you some extra files that are beneficial and it'll link you up with the github so you can update your repository in case they update the project to be better (i.e. adding better labels or commenting on code to be more easily understood, since the disassembly is otherwise complete at this point).

>For maps , would it be possible to rip them from the big hoenn map demake posted above?

Unfortunately no. I think you'd have to define some extra tiles for this project (even if you don't want to make custom OW graphics; if you do you obviously need to make extra tiles) since everything is done in a 2x2 grid and that map probably doesn't follow it exactly. The editor is really user-friendly, though, things like map connections and scrolling through tilesets and such come easy.

So at best i could probably only use them for reference? Thats gonna be a huge time sink. Oh well at least i dont need to design all the pokemon from scratch.
>>
>>29696542
>Thats gonna be a huge time sink.

ROMhacking always is.

One last thing I can think to give you is this: it's an old attempt at porting Emerald to Gen 2 from years ago. The beta doesn't go past Petalburg and the music is ear-raping, but you'd probably be interested in it.

>They all look they they belong to the same game
You have seen those sprites, right?
There's next to no connecting features between them either in proportion, design or general style. Hell Pidgey doesn't even look like it belongs in the same line let alone game.

Are you sure you're just not making the connection due to the future designs?

Nah man. The line work and shading is consistent between sprites for all of the Kantomons, and while some fan works emulated it nicely anyone can instantly tell where the official sprites end and the fan sprites begin. It's not good.

Also Pidgey manages to fit in because his good friend Spearow is here to compare to.

Almost all Pokemon have lighting coming in from the left side wether it's at a heightened angle or just straight on with few excepts, this gives the game one layer of cohesion being when a Pokemon faints or its switched out the transition from a light sources with an origin to the left of the Pokemon to an origin to the right is generally avoided giving the pokemon a unified shading. Also don't forget that color was a complete and total after thought as most Pokemon were originally drawn out using the gameboy's grey scale pallette and by removing the sporadic change that is the colored sprites we gain ANOTHER level of cohesion, you could argue by removing the colors of the fan work it could make THOSE sprites more cohesive to the official work but that's where my last point comes in. The last layer of cohesion in the sprites is, as I've stated before, the line work, most every Pokemon in this picture is highly detailed to a point even if they end up looking kind of doofy (I.e bulbasaur family) yet in the case of Bulbasaur's line they still have immense detail in their flowers and leaves and there's very few ""mistakes"" with smooth outlines for the most part unlike the fan work which leaves in jagged and and rigid line art because "gen 1 has bad sprites." ALSO I just noticed....

Why does the full gen 1 to gen 5 demake include sprites from both Red, Green AND Blue instead of just the original? That's weird.

I can understand making their skin black because I can see Gamefreak having done that innocently in Gen 1 ala Jynx but the freaking expressions completely ruin the feel of the Pokémon.
