I'd say 22xx if we ever go that way, we need to know how genes interact with each others way way better if we ever want to create brand new species, or even manipulate existing ones but knowing what we're doing.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think we can't design brand new genes, and even if we can, since genes interact in the most complicated way, it makes things a bit much too unpredictable.
Kinda like the "spots" gene in dalmation dogs makes them deaf. That kind of genetic bullshit.
