3DS XL or New 3DS XL?
Is the only difference between them, the fact that New 3DS XL has a NFC reader for Amiibo?
Is there any other hardware difference?
New 3DS has better 3D-ness and an extra circle dongle, neither really relevant for sunmoon though

Neither

New 3DS has more processing power. Some games like Monster Hunter 4 and Hyrule Warriors look better, with better textures and more elements on screen, and have less loading time on it.

pretty sure people have reported framerate issues on O3DS with S/M

I have a New 3DS XL. I can tell you first hand games run a lot faster because it has more processing power. And everything looks better in a New 3DS XL. Plus, amiibo functionality for games that use it is nifty, and you don't need an extra piece of hardware. True, the right dongle isn't used for much. It was mostly included for games like Smash 3ds, Xenoblade, and Monster Hunter. But it's not in the way or anything.
I think new uses the micro SD card

Xenoblade Chronicles is New3DS exclusive.
It's better to get the new if you're just buying one now. A lot of the new VC games are only available on the new (mainly SNES games).

So does O3ds anon
I just swapped my old card for a 64 gb
As other anons mentioned, better processing power. Bit worried about my O3dsXL lagging with S/M, though I didn't have issues with the demo
