I haven't seen any gifs of the animation being used as an example of how bad it is because it doesn't LOOK bad when it's viewed the way it was intended.

It's actually MORE animated than XY. XY relied on a lot of pausing "cool" shots and slowdowns for impact, almost like a zigzag of motion. A lot of shonen anime does this, and it's a visual trick so that they can make animation flashy while actually spending less on actually animated frames.

Meanwhile SM has more fluid and smooth animation, hence why it gets all smeary when you pause in the middle of it.

That's not how this works

It actually makes me want to give the anime a try for the first time in over a decade. I've always thought they should of just split the anime into a more serious shonen series about Ash, and a comedy series about Team Rocket.
This seems like the next best thing, better to go all out comedy than a mish-mash of the two that doesn't quite work (for me anyway)
