I've been boxing starters since Gen II.

There are always more interesting Pokemon and more cohesive teams to be built. There's no reason to keep a starter just because the game forces you to own one.

Gen III on there is not one well-designed starter, except maybe that fire monkey, though it isn't to my taste.

Squirtle and Totodile are interesting. Mudkip doesn't bear a resemblance to anything in particular and comes off as lazy: just a few blue ovals.

The penguin and the water-panda are pathetic. The water-panda might even be the worst starter design in the series.

I do actually think Poplio has an interesting design, but it's final form is over-detailed and needlessly anthropomorphic.

I'm outdoing you, senpai. Swampert is ugly, over-laden with needless details, and double NERFed with a terrible color scheme.

Blaziken is a gross anthropomorph. This is the beginning of the radical design failure in Pokemon.

Sceptile isn't as terrible as the others, but it doesn't have any particularly redeeming feature either. It's an upright lizard with Trix Yogurt color scheme.

Gen 7 was a disappointment for me, but this month changed a lot of things. Now it isn't the gen with the worst designs anymore, thanks to the starters and a few more lines. It could be a lot better though, the number of Pokemon that don't evolve is stupid, and the low ammount of three-stage lines is worse.

At least I found my new favorite starter, I may end up using all three

Pokemon mystery dungeon made me like this little guy so much. I played that game like 10 times and I'd always get machop or mudkip on the quiz and take cyndaquil as my partner, and anyone that has played that game will know how emotional it gets.

I wasn't sure about Incineroar because I wanted a "serious-cat" evo for Litten, but his poses as a heel in the last video were great, and I don't even like wrestling.

I feel Emboar mostly gets a bad rep because it was the third in the line of fire fighting starters, and had he been first or second, maybe it wouldnt be so hated.

Either way its my personal favorite fire type, as I tend to lean towards bulky heavy hitting looking mons, and Blaziken and Infernape never seemed to do it for me (though ive grown to appreciate all three).

Still I dont blame people for disliking the 5th gen starters as a whole. They didnt do much for interesting types. Still im glad to see everyone getting along instead of being at each others throats over "best starter" shitposting like it usually is.

Honestly, as a fire-type lover who doesn't mind the fighting type, my biggest gripe with Emboar has always been its lack of a neck. While pigs don't have the most prominent necks in the world, their heads also don't sit at that angle.

I've given every starter their own team to run through; playing with my preferred 2 in remakes.
Going through with Chikorita's line in Crystal was one of the hardest things to do.
