I really would've liked heatran a lot more if it wasn't a legendary. It does have the whole magma stone thing, but that feels a bit tacked on. It would've been cooler if it was just a super rare pokemon like volcarona or rotom that rarely crawled out of the mantle at certain weak points. It would've been cool to think that there was a just a bunch of super rare powerful mons living beneath the crust that rarely surfaced. This could still totally be the case for Heatran, but they made it a non breedable legandary.

They haven't explained it in-game and I'm unfamiliar with whatever Heatran is based on so I dunno. However, I'd guarantee that if you were to go figure out what it's based on then it would make perfect sense that it has a gender.
Otherwise they stuck on the gender as a subtle, in-game nod saying 'yeah, legendary Pokemon are just regular Pokemon that happen to have legends written about them'.

It covers in the game event with the protecting the rock thing and the trial to get the passage to steal it from him on the male side. I'm not convinced that this is specifically the design source, but it's an example of standard volcano mythology and most world deities share a base heritage so there's likely some that fit better. My point is that there's a God it's based on and that's why it is Legendary, but the actual God(s) are why the Pokemon includes a gender as part of its design.

I also looked at some Aztec gods since they have a male and female gender divide too and the female is serpentine and was 'turned into a dog' so I thought that might explain Heatran's physiology. I really wish they'd release design notes every generation so all this speculation wouldn't be necessary.
I thought Agni because "Agni as fire has been one of the five inert impermanent constituents (Dhatus) along with space (Akasa), water (Ap), air (Vayu) and earth (Prithvi), the five combining to form the empirically perceived material existence (Prakriti)" - thanks wikipedia.
I thought that fit the whole Gen 4 set about creating the world and stuff.

A lot of volcano gods are actually just volcanoes and fables about unseen gods who live in/under them which I'm guessing explains his underbelly and him being the 'crater' Pokemon.
Have you played Dragonquest 7? Most Volcano gods seem to be the same as the second dungeon.
No idea about the walking on ceilings bit in its dex entries and I'm not sure if the head piece is an homage to Agni's ram or not.

It's a Pokemon, it's a Pokemon classed as Legendary (based on a deity and celebrated as one in the games as being the subject of legends).
Above in this thread - which you're meant to read before you post in because, you know, that's how a discussion works, it was theorised that Heatran's based loosely on standard Volcano gods where the crater is worshipped and the site of ritual sacrifice. The gender divide and entire 'magma stone' thing can be related to Philippine volcano gods and Heatran's physical shape is in part attested to the shape of a volcanic crater and in part to Agni's ram (Agni being the most notable god relating to volcanoes) which would cover the horns, shield and shackle-like details that Heatran bears.
Or, you know, I could just just say "oh yah, it's definitely some random asspull theory about nothing that has no relation to volcanoes or deities that doesn't make any sense and throw in the word modern too" and that would make me real smart and good just like you, anon, right?

I see no worship of any of those in the games. Arcanine is of course not based on a deity but is based on those lion-dogs at the front of shrines and has no legends about him and those other two have no legends either. There's some documentation given to you about Lucario being important to people through history, but they aren't considered gods.

If you read my posts you'd know well that I'm aware that Legendary Pokemon are just rare Pokemon who, as a species, happen to be subject of Legends and worshipped. The Pokemon are used in game to reflect aspects of religious belief that exist in the real world. However, the Pokemon are all very obviously based on actual theological elements and that's just a fact.
