As someone living in Hawaii, I can tell you that malasadas are pretty overrated. It's basically a fried dough pastry rolled in sugar. It's almost like eating a krispy kreme doughnut, if the outside were a lot crispier.

However, if you get the ones with filling on the inside? Oh boy, those are good. Haupia and chocolate filling is the best, and it's like eating crack.

They're served hot and are fried on the outside and rolled in sugar. Insides are fluffy and filling is optional. I prefer mines plain and hot.
