My vote's for Crystal Shards. Don't know why Game Freak ditched the combo mechanic the next gen. It wasn't even as overcentralizing as the Robobot armor.

4, specifically after the Chomp ban which was obviously necessary but before the Mence ban which was the first sign that smogon would become the joke they are today

General player quality was much higher then too, shoddy ladder was much harder than showdown has ever been

4 still had some dumb stuff (le suicide lead meta essentially made every match 5v5) but overall it was probably the first and last time where singles was actually well balanced and enjoyable

I own them both, and honestly...

They're both really good. You'll probably like Robobot more, but I like the final boss of Triple Deluxe over the final boss of Robobot. Triple Deluxe is also significantly more challenging, though that's not saying much unless you're doing a boss rush or Dedede Tour.

Gen 4. It introduced the physical/special split, moves, and abilities to help out pokemon and give them better STAB and coverage options. Overall the most balanced metagame.

All the gens below 4 lacked the physical/special split, so lots of mons like breloom couldn't even use their stab attacks reliably and had to rely on strange movesets with hidden power for coverage. lack of items like choice scarf and choice specs also cucked some other mons.

Gen 5 was a cancer fest with infinite weather bullshit. Sand Veil and Sand Rush were broken as fuck.

Gen 6 fucked over the balance of the metagame as well. Fairy mons have an unnecessary amount of resistances, take care of types that are filled with offensive mons, and are only weak to Steel and Poison types, which have an abudance of either defensive mons or shitmons that lack the proper attacking stats to reliably take care of fairy types. Megas were a hit and miss. Some of them didn't even improve a pokemon that much, but others like Mega Kangaskhan were broken as fuck and unnnecessary.
