just make the plates an in-game mechanic where an NPC fuses them into the Mega stone : Arceusite.

The plates are obtained through fetch quests from hard, type appropriate dungeons with a plate guardian (pseudo or non-mascot legend) at the end of each.

That'd make sense, although how would the ability work, then? Making you able to pick the type manually? I dunno if they're willing to make an entirely different UI for that.
