He was the anti-ghost. A normal type that could attack but not be attacked by ghost types in gen 2 made Morty easy.

Memes aside, this is really not an issue. He's said to be very intelligent and has a ton of psychic moves, so if he had picked up a new second typing it would have been psychic anyway.
However, this was way back in gen 2 and their normal/flying pattern for my mom's birds was still in full swing.
