I think that's picked randomly and she was just designed first. It might be just me, but having played as both, it felt like the story was written with a male protagonist in mind. Especially the friendship between the protagonist, Bianca and Cheren, and the rivalry between N and the protagonist. A male character just fits those scenarios better.

The tap was amazing, as was seeing Brendan react during the battle. Only one we've seen was Blue vs the E4 and that's a controlled official match. We're seeing Brendan on his actual adventure where there are threats to him and less guidelines to follow. It adds a certain excitement. I also enjoyed how , utilized the environment, how they showed it using recover on its missing chunks like it was nothing, and especially switching forms during the fight. I wish it did that during the ingame fight.

I loved the way Deoxys sounded, it was like his in-game cry.

I don't really notice much between the protag and the BW1 "rivals" to really push to the protag being one gender or the other, and they have a whole background together never touched on which any sort of status quo between them could've been formed from. As for N, it is pretty typical shonen rival fixation type stuff, but one could also argue there might be a different sort of fixation going on from N, a fairly awkward young adult who has been sheltered his entire life by a manipulative parent.

It's pretty ambiguous, as always. The only regions I'd go outright with one or the other for what's show in the game are Red for reasons we all know, and Serena, because the five Kalos kids practically make a Power Rangers/Super Sentai or super robot pilot type group with their archetypes and color coding, and the one in red is usually the leader.

I really liked the story in ORAS outside of DE. Several characters had much stronger characterization, and Magma/Aqua have somewhat more definition to their goals and things like Tabitha/Shelly actually looking in depth to see if the group's plans may fail when they get bad feelings about them. The Groudon/Kyogre encounter in the Cave of Origin has much better setpiecing as well, I felt, but that's not quite the same.
