Pokeballs don't actually capture unwilling Pokemon. In order to catch a Pokemon, you have to earn its respect through kicking its shit in or sheer persistence. Only once the Pokemon has decided "fuck it, why not" will they actually stop breaking out.

Fainted Pokemon are unable to consent to the pokeball, and thus the capture automatically fails. Sleep is a different condition from fainted where a Pokemon is still capable of understanding communication; thus Sleep Talk and Snore can still be ordered. Some moves (HMs) are able to used while fainted, but that is a function of muscle memory, not conscious effort, which makes them difficult to forget.

needs to be conscious for the pokemon to imprint on its pokeball. same reason pokemon cant switch balls- once they bond with it, theyre connected to it forever. and they need to be awake to bond with it
