You can't apply normal logic to Ash. The way Bonnie, Clemont, and Pikachu reacted was NORMAL. Ash is literally an emotionless battle bot who doesn't understand love AT ALL. Kinda the same for me.
I used to watch OS when i was a kid and liked it, didnt expect anything, it was fun.
Then Advance came and he was still 10 years old, so i kinda got bored. Didnt know DP was good at that time, so i didnt watch either.

I was aware on how trash BW was too.

Then, when i started playing pokemon again, i kinda got curious on how the anime was doing.
Then i saw Serena, but that didnt matter to me, i got curious on the crush she had. Then i saw teh childhood flashback, and i was like "what the fuck is this? something new? i wanna see this" and thats how it all began.
Then i realized Ash's pokemon were evolving. Then i realized Ash was competent. Then i saw Serena focus episodes, and i was like "woah, this pokemon season has an actual story", or at least it didnt feel like bunch load of filler like OS.
Status quo wasnt a thing anymore, and i was actually expecting something and looking forward to something this time. It was great.

I actually remember back in the early AG era, pokeshippers used to ship May with Brock before Drew was introduced because there was no other male to pair her with.

Pretty much the same for me. I had quit watching the show sometime during Johto as a kid because I lost interest for the show (which is understandable, fucking Johto), but I had always had a certain liking for the games, and Ash had always been sort of my childhood hero. When Gen 6 were confirmed for 3D games, I decided to buy myself a 3DS and the game, which is also when I discovered the XY anime on /vp/. It was pretty much exactly what I'd wanted from the show.

Now I've pretty much seen every episode that's ever aired out of all the series, though it's been quite a sluggish ride to watch them all in less than 3 years.

With XY they did their damndest to make it as awesome as possible. This is evident in everything from animation to the music and songs they wrote for it.

DP is also extremely good, but it has a completely different feeling to it. It has a sort of laidback comfy style to it yet it still tells a pretty big story that practically spans from start to finish. This is also displayed in the animation which is crisp but nothing too spectacular, and the music puts a unique atmospheric style to the whole thing.

You could say that XY excels in being an awesome show that makes you go "HELL YEAH", while DP is like an acquired taste where after everything you can just lay back and say "damn that was fucking good".
