I was really confused with these two types when I was a kid. Doesn't help that they have common weaknesses and that they were often paired together in first gen.

Rock is minerals in general as of late, like Gigalith and Diancie

Ground is more of an element that isn't tied to minerals. That's why things like Sandslash or Trapinch are Ground-types without 'looking' the part or some shit. Basically dirt, sand or animals related to the former

Rock types are made of Rock.
Ground types are creatures that live in the ground.

>rolls around, presumably making dirt and such go flying

>made of or covered with sand/dirt/mud/clay
Sandygast, Claydol, Wormadam-S, Mudsdale, Torterra, Golurk
>lives in mud
All the Water/Ground types
>is heavy and makes the ground tremble
Groudon, Mudsdale, Torterra, Rhydon line, Golurk
>earth elemental
Groudon, Landorus

Presumably sand/dirt/mud/clay falls under Ground and not Rock because it is malleable and not rock solid.

Grounds main themes are Sand/Mud/Digging, all loose and malleable forms of the Earth
Rock are based on simply solid rock

Ground is more of a general earth elemental type, while Rock was originally intended to be the "hardy/defensive" type since it resisted the most common type attack. Note how Rhydon and Rhyhorn are never mentioned to be made of literal rocks.
