I don't care how many player-discovered nuances there are in Melee or how much faster it is, I love that in Sm4sh nearly every character is balanced infinitely better than in Melee. It does? I haven't played in a while, but when I played (competitively) the variety was absurd. The only real "meta picks" were Sheik, ZSS and Rosalina, which eventually people developed workarounds.

I heard since Bayonetta came out it's been mostly her and... Cloud? I think? I was salty over the super-late DLC and dropped it.

Nonetheless, it felt more like a constant 6-8 top tier characters, which was a hell of a lot better than...

You see him use techs to stop the Mecha Koopa bombs from exploding in his hand, you see him altering the speed of the car during side-B's by using it midair, etc.

There's just so much more shit like that in Sm4sh than there is in Melee-- character-specific tricks that turn an off-meta pick into something potentially viable. In general, just makes for way more palatable gameplay I feel. My only gripe is the very back-and-forth, slow trades in Sm4sh. Not as many cool follow-ups.
