I liked the story in B/W and B2/W2

XY felt like they started to write a story and gave up halfway through so they scrambled a bunch of characters and general tropes together with a loosely connected "lore" that was never explored or expaned upon.

This. The storytelling in Gen 5 certainly wasn't some masterpiece, but it was really good for Pokemon. It certainly had issues, but I see no problem with it being a thing

SM is way more lighthearted except for probably the UB/Aether stuff which seems legit compelling.

BW and BW2 tried so hard to be serious despite being a childrens game that it came off terribly.

Team Skull alone already has better writing than the entirety of Gen V. It's fun, there's jokes that actually land, etc.

It was a good enough story for Pokémon. It had some mature themes that most kids wouldn't think about so it also added as a learning medium and taught some life lessons, just some things to think about regarding life and the value to the choices you make.

Aynway, I don't even know why Gen.V games always get brought up in terms of story, when it was Platinum that really started it. BW2 didn't even have a focus on the story, especially not one that could be regarded as "trying too far".

The actual element of B/W's story that agitates people is deciding to put less focus on the dated concept of challenging the league by shifting the focus away from it and integrating it more smoothly. This is also why SM will be good in that regard, they finally got the courage to abandon it completely.
