Hilda/Hilbert were at one point said to be 16, but it's dubious because of conflcting interviews/sources.

Serena/Calem are 16-17, not 18. (Adult protag in Pokémon? You crazy? They're "slightly older" than Emma, who was 16.)

Oh, and "Leaf" isn't canon lmao. NEVER EVER.

Anyways, I'm more interested in Rivals/Leaders being in S/M, than other protagonists. Protagonists are mostly blank slates to project onto. They hardly have their own character or personality, so they'd have to create them from scratch, possibly alienating the people who played as them.

I think it was made before their ages were confirmed. In other words after their art was released but before ORAS came out.

I've seen people say that there are interviews saying they're 14-15 or middle school age but wasn't able to find the original interviews anywhere.

If we look to the Manga adaptations, Hilda/Hilbert are portrayed as 16, but Rosa/Nate are 14. So it's possible that they were intended to be 14, but were at earlier points in time considered 16, with the manga already sticking to that.

14-16 just seems like an accurate ballpark, so headcanon whichever you see fit.

As NPC/Rival characters, they are their own characters. Lucas and May for example. But as the player characters, they are blank slates. It's why Red doesn't talk, and why Ethan/Brendan in Generations were kept as vague as possible, outside of Brendan picking Sceptile.

Don't be a fool. While Red is the only previous character to physically show up in other games, nearly all other protagonists have been referenced at some point. Cynthia in B/W references the Gen 4 Protagonist and how they calmed Giratina, for example.

You're missing the point. Sure some of the unselected protagonists are npcs with their own character, but having one appear in their npc form confirms the other gender was canon, alienating people who picked the other. And vague references are just that, they keep them vague and broad to maintain the allusion that your journey is still valid, down to gender and even personality of your character. Red is the exception to all this since he is the established canon character in a time when there was no gender choice and GS were meant to be the end of the franchise.

Apparently the interviews saying 14 were from Japanese magazines but I couldn't find scans of them. It's possible that somebody just made it up at some point and everyone else just accepted it as a fact. It's ambiguous either way though, like you said 14-16 seems close enough.
