Back when RSE and FRLG were new it was easy to tell they were connected due to the post game plot of getting the ruby and sapphire in FRLG.

ORAS kind of fucked the timeline up since it was made, it ended up having to use the alternate universe idea to justify itself.

ORAS should have just been sequel game to Emerald imo. It would have allowed them to make older designs for characters, alongside changing the region up to fix any problems people have, and just justify it as time passing by.
