In the West it's actually been gaining popularity again (especially in Britain for some reason), there's just this weird stigma against wrestling as if it being theatrical somehow makes it bad but any other tv show, movie or play is ok. Erm, no. Some things are written literally and meant to be taken directly. There's no underlying themes behind 'The Big Bang Theory', you know? That's why it's shit, I guess. Even the works of Kafka are still fairly straight forward and absolutely not cryptic. Pokemon can have much more difficult readings since a lot of them require certain cultural knowledge (like Jynx who is based on a mountain hag yokai, for example), but that ties into the core concept of a child going for an adventure and learning about the world which ties to the trading mechanic; the player goes out into the world and through encountering fellow 'trainers' can learn from their perspectives on designs. Of course, it doesn't really work in practice when some lard stain at bulbapedo writes about Jynx being a ganguro girl and everyone starts blabbing like it's true or some dork keeps saying Squirtle is a squirrel. There are always going to be holes in your audience, no matter what. A great example; Incineroar is a heel based on Black Tiger, but people say it's Tiger Mask when it clearly is not. You've two sides, one that gets it and enjoys the heelishness and the other side who think they get it and carry on not reading things properly.

Anyway, how could you even argue that an entire story-based medium has no good characters or stories? That doesn't really make sense, especially since character archetypes based on Buddy Rogers and Dusty Rhodes, Antonio Inoki and Rikidozan are all incredibly prevalent in contemporary media of every type. If you're some weeb who reads manga and watches anime then I'm sure you'd love to know that almost all of the tropes in both of those come from Japanese wrestling.
Cultural studies like this are my bread and butter, mate, and I know an awful lot about all of it. Wrestling is hugely important historically in terms of world culture and in terms of popular culture and the evolution of storytelling over the years. That's a fact.
